Certified Musculoskeletal Ultrasonographer
2 Courses | 30 Hours | 4 Days
The Certified Musculoskeletal Ultrasonographer credential consists of 30 hours of didactic, technical and hands-on training in the essential components of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound of the upper and lower extremities. Two courses comprise the Cert. MSK Ultrasonographer credential: MSKU-1 (Diagnostic MSK Ultrasonography of the Upper Extremities) and MSKU-2 (Diagnostic MSK Ultrasonography of the Lower Extremities). No prerequisites are needed for enrollment in the MSKU courses; however, registrants must be a licensed PT, DC, MD, DO, DPM, NP, or PA in their respective state or country. Following the completion of MSKU-1 and MSKU-2, clinicians will be a Certified Musculoskeletal Ultrasonographer (Cert. MSK Ultrasonographer).
Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSKU) is an evidence-based, cost efficient, imaging modality. MSKU has diagnostic accuracy comparable to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for common soft tissue pathology, including enthesopathy, tendinopathy, ligament pathology, joint pathology, and compressive neuropathies of the upper extremity. Licensed healthcare professionals including physical therapists (PT), medical doctors (MD), osteopathic doctors (DO), Chiropractors (DC), physician assistants (PA) and nurse practitioners (NP) meet the educational requirements to practice MSK Ultrasonography. Lecture and live demonstrations with expert sonographers, using state of the art equipment, are utilized to prepare the participant for extensive hands-on scanning during the laboratory sessions.
MSKU-1 is a two-day in-person diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound course that includes 70% hands-on practical training and 30% didactic instruction. This course focuses on the essential components of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound of the upper extremities. Both normal anatomy and pathology of the upper extremity will be covered. Participants will perform diagnostic ultrasound on the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Both normal anatomy and pathology of specific tissues will be addressed in detail. This course does include but is not limited to tissue specific diagnoses of the upper extremity, including rotator cuff tendinopathy, biceps tendon pathologies, subacromial bursitis, labral pathology, lateral/medial epicondylalgia, collateral ligament pathology, tenosynovitis, osteoarthritis, radial tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome.
MSKU-2 is a two-day in-person diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound course that includes 70% hands-on practical training and 30% didactic instruction. This course focuses on the essential components of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound of the lower extremities. Participants will perform diagnostic ultrasound on the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Both normal anatomy and pathology of specific tissues will be addressed in detail. This course does include but is not limited to tissue specific diagnoses of the lower extremity, including joint effusions, hip capsule/labral pathology, gluteal/hamstring tendinopathy, patellar/quad tendinopathy, patellar impingement syndromes, collateral ligament pathology, meniscal pathology, osteoarthritis, Achilles/peroneal/posterior tibialis tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis.
